How do you make your money ?

My nephew is coming to that age when he has to decide about his future career etc. I've worked in the city for about 20 years now, for banks, asset managers and hedge funds.
He wants to potentially follow my path, but I've encouraged him to look at trades too, with a view owning his own business one day.
I have a few friends that have worked very hard over the years to develop their skills and they are now reaping the rewards, so I'm using them as an example too. Other friends have done very well out of buying/selling their properties at the right time/inheritance etc, so good luck to them.

And the Colonel lost.
In fact, all the other AI’s that the Air Force Research Lab had in their possession also lost to ALPHA…and so did all of the other human experts who tried their skills against ALPHA’s superior algorithms.

I'm a Sparky.
Job is varied, well paid and interesting. Can't see a time when a good Sparks isn't needed, especially with the piss poor quality of new house builds.
Aside from what I get for my day job it has also saved me countless £££'s as I can do most things on my house and those I can't do I get mates in. As a house is usually a persons biggest financial investment / commitment it's great to know how it works and how to fix / improve it.
I also love having a van

Neither of my boys is being encouraged to go straight from school into higher education as they are not especially analytical, visual memory or left-brained types. If they want to go to college to do economics or political science or something, they're out in the market making themselves useful for at least five years first.

I would love to do something like painting & decorating/handypersoning but my arms aren't long enough.

I wish I had a trade behind me.
I've done lots of things but predominantly sales.
I fucking hate it.
Most sales people are complete cunts and when I scour jobs and see "target driven, money hungry, kpi this and sales target that" I just cringe.
I hate corporate and companies that teach ruthless in ethical sales techniques.
I have run my own business and I now work for a sme with scope for advancement in what I do - but if I could fuck it all off, put on an old pair of jeans and a polo, jump in a van and go an earn my crust without having to e-mail constantly over nothing then I'd jump at the chance - but a house move, a wedding and a young family have put paid to that type of career change.

I raid the sea lanes. As commander of my own fleet of U-boats, I find this to be a sensible use of resources in a time of economic uncertainty, and also a great way of keeping my ghost legion of long-dead Nazis occupied and entertained. Should your nephew be interested in learning more about the life of an eternally cursed submariner, our open days are Monday through Wednesday, when the Wolfsbane blooms, and every Sunday during the school holidays.

At that age I would get Trade, then move on. If you have an ability to fix or repair/decorate, you always will have an option to fall back on. Cash too swt.

Worst thing I ever did was going into business on me jack... set up a few Video delivery rounds in the early 90's.... about 50% of my customers were freaks.... including one woman I used to call darth Vader who was tubed up to a couple of oxygen tanks in her bed... loved going in there helping her with her piss bag... could not wait getting into government IT work after that

I have a degree in Economics and Political Science which lead to various jobs in The City finally as a transition manager. I gave it all up and I am now a self employed electrician with a few properties I rent out. In between I taught English at a university in Cambodia. Quite a range there.
The point? Certainly when I was at school the careers advice was you choose a career for the rest of your life. Load of rubbish, try something until you don't like it then move on.

If he's thinking about a job in technology, always be prepared to change direction, and often quite quickly, to take advantage of whichever way the white hot wind is blowing.
A lot of IT stuff is plug-n-play these days, which can be done by monkeys, so services is the better option.
Out of all the roles I've had over my career, my favourite was one where I could sit on the beach - anywhere in the world - for 3 weeks out of 4 and work remotely off a laptop - and I really only turned up at the office that one week a month to book my hours and get them signed off.
